The Blazar Remus 1.5x anamorphic lenses bring a modern version of classic vintage anamorphic features to a compact, full-frame design. Yes, the optical recipe is not traditional, however, the look of the images kind of is! Our set includes the 33mm T1.8, 45mm T2.1, 65mm T2.1, and 100mm T2.8 lenses, each featuring a 1.5x squeeze factor. The lenses draw inspiration from legacy anamorphic glass, both in their optical rendering and the design of their sleek, silver housings, while remaining extremely compact compared to traditional anamorphic sets.
Design and Build
The Remus lenses are designed for versatility and portability. Their compact form factor makes them easy to handle on handheld rigs, gimbals, and lightweight setups. Each lens is built with a durable, all-metal housing. The cosmetic look of the housings subtly resembles Panavision lenses, hint, hint, giving a classic, high-end feel to the set.
Optical Characteristics
The lenses deliver a cinematic image with organic imperfections. Images are not super clean and have more than enough character to feel alive. The 1.5x squeeze strikes a balance between a traditional widescreen look and modern sensor flexibility, producing oval bokeh, horizontal silver flares, and smooth falloff in the corners of the frame.
While the lenses maintain a consistent visual tone across focal lengths, we noticed a few traits worth mentioning. The wider lenses, especially the 33mm, exhibit a degree of barrel distortion that gives a distinctive curvature to straight lines near the frame edges. This distortion can add a vintage touch but is noticeable in geometric compositions.
In terms of sharpness, the Remus set performs well in the center of the frame, particularly when stopped down. However, at wider apertures like T1.8 and T2.1, there is visible softness. This softness contributes to the lens’s signature, giving faces and textures a more natural and cinematic roll-off, but it’s worth remembering that for productions seeking a more clinical image.
Flaring
The Remus lenses exhibit controlled silver flare, which can be used creatively to enhance the cinematic feel. This flaring is most noticeable in backlit scenes or when shooting into bright light sources, producing elegant, soft streaks without overwhelming the image. The effect can be used to evoke the feel of classic anamorphic productions while maintaining modern image quality. Keep in mind, a matte box can help control the flaring precisely.
Final Thoughts
The Blazar Remux 1.5x set offers filmmakers the perfect blend of vintage throwback, modern handling, and lots of character. Its compact design, full-frame coverage, and unique optical qualities ensure every frame carries a sense of life and personality.
